Good evening! So - I'm not sure if I'm burdening you with this ask, so do excuse me beforehand - I've been pondering on Jedi and emotions, specifically darker emotions, and I had a little thought. If a Jedi (not one who has fallen) were to be overwhelmed by a negative emotion, hatred for instance, but they performed an (intended positive) action whilst they were in the throes of that hate, would that cause them to fall, do you think? Or is malicious intent necessary? I hope I'm making sense
Hey!! Don’t worry, you are not burdening me :P I love answering questions :)
I think I get what you’re trying to say. Is performing a good action fueled by ‘negative’ emotions enough to make someone ‘fall’? Short answer is no. long answer…is not that simple.
What we call ‘fall’ is the result of a choice, not the person’s emotional state. Anakin ‘fell’ when he decided to join the Sith and explore the dark side. He didn’t fall when he was consumed with worry and grief for his mother, when he slaughtered the tusken, when he killed Dooku or did any of the many shady things he did during the clone wars.
If slaughter an entire community of people (children included) doesn’t *automatically* make you go dark side, I’d say it’s a choice. Obi-wan was feeling hatred (a dark side emotion) when he ‘killed’ Maul in TPM but he was never even considered a ‘fallen’ jedi. On the other hand, beings like Ventress and Dooku who chose to walk away from the Jedi Order and willingly joined the Sith are considered dark side users.
What it’s important to remember is the distinction between what the Jedi taught their members and what actually happened. The Jedi Order believe the dark side was a one way street, that once you give in to the ‘negative’ emotions you WILL loose your way in the dark. This creates a very interested (and complicated) moral dilemma:
“‘Ah, I see. You can do whatever you want, so long as you maintain your Jedi calm? So long as you can tell yourself you’re valuing life? You can kill and kill and kill and kill, so long as you don’t lose your temper?’ She shook her head, blinking astonishment. 'Isn’t that a little sick?’ Matthew Stover’s The New Jedi Order: Traitor
The Jedi of the Prequel Era believe that any ‘negative’ emotion was a pathway to the dark side, to evil so they did everything they could to avoid it. that’s why they took infants before they would form attachments to their biological families and that’s why they didn’t trust Anakin. they didn’t believe that someone who had been exposed to such emotions could ever fully live without experiencing them again.
“To dwell in the dark will lead to suffering. Attachments will cause you to lose sight of your path and are cause for expulsion from the Order.” The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force by Daniel Wallace
Passion lines the path to the dark side and must be avoided. Fear, anger, and hate are strong passions that will cause you to lose focus and find appeal in the easy pleasures of the dark side. Love is also a strong passion and equally dangerous. The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force by Daniel Wallace
“Those who obsess over a parent, child, or lover devote all their energies toward the special object of their focus. The Jedi must serve all, not a select few. Should the urge to contact your birth families or form romantic attachments emerge, please consult your Master.” The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force by Daniel Wallace
“As Jedi learn more about the Force, it is not unusual for them to form their own theories about how and why it works. They question how, if the Force creates and sustains life, it can have a dark side. Some arrive at the conclusion that the Force is not divided into dark and light, that its energy is inherently positive, and that there is no “dark side” waiting to corrupt them. Time and again, this conclusion has been proved erroneous, and the Jedi who felt compelled to test the limits of the Force rarely perceived the dangers of their explorations. As they approached the brink of the dark side, some were rescued by other Jedi or came back willingly when they saw the error of their ways. Those who refused to renounce their mistaken beliefs were either exiled to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, or destroyed.” [Ryder’s Windham’s Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force]
But as much as the jedi order believed that experiencing ‘dark’ emotions was enough to mark you forever, we know for a fact that experiencing and even using the dark side is not a one way street. Anakin committed a terrible crime against the tuskens *and* he managed to save millions of lives in the war before he finally became vader. Some Jedi of the Old Republic also used the ‘dark side’ on a regular basis without even ‘falling’.
So, no, emotions and intent alone is not enough to make one ‘fall’ or go evil even if that what the jedi teaches their members. Joining the sith, becoming a evil person is a fully conscious *choice*, not the automatic result of whatever emotions people might be experiencing.

Thoughts on Age Of Resistance:Snoke

I don’t know why I bothered expecting anything to see how Snoke turned Ben Solo or learn anything about Snoke’s character as this is the man who destroyed 30 years of peace and turned Han and Leia’s son to the dark side and destroyed Luke’s new Jedi Order and Luke’s spirit. But no, instead of any of that we just get Kylo already being Kylo Ren and Snoke training Kylo that shows Dagonah’s cave destroyed.
I wanted to see Snoke turning his heart and see that Snoke had him even before Luke entered his hut. I want to know who Snoke was and where he came from. I want to see how Ben Solo so easily turned on Luke and his family. These are interesting things that would enhance the Sequel trilogy. But they never show that stuff, so the ST remains a rather shallow husk devoid of any substance or any unique world building.
You don’t even use the fact that Snoke KNEW Han, Luke and Leia. Leia knew that Snoke was out there, so Leia sent Ben with Luke for his protection. So Leia knew Ben was being influenced and later figured it was Snoke somehow, but the writers never bother to tell us who he actually is and Luke failed (again) to stop the spread of Snoke’s influence and then made it worse. TLJ novel implies Snoke met Luke at some point and convinced him that he should rebuild the Jedi, so Snoke could kill them off at once at a later time. So Luke Skywalker’s Jedi were a ploy by Snoke to destroy them and Luke didn’t realize what was going on until that night. Even though Luke and Leia knew of Snoke and what he was up to, they still failed and not only that, but the writers took the time set this up, but not go through the hard work of explaining how this makes sense. So much of the ST is saying vague shit so they don’t have elaborate, which probably wouldn’t make sense anyway. I mean Luke’s says he sees great evil in Ben, but it’s never specified because what would be so scary that Luke would kill his nephew, his best friend and sister’s son when he could not kill Vader? You could explain that one last adventure that Luke, Han and Leia had they encountered Snoke and to prevent another Palpatine, they gave him the majority of his injuries, but he survived and went after Ben Solo as revenge. But fuck world building right?
And he just wears the same stupid robe from TLJ

Could I expect anything less from a creatively bankrupt “canon” writers? Where the hell is Timothy Zahn, Daniel Wallace, Matthew Stover and James Luceno when I need good world building? It’s sad and pathetic that my idea of Snoke being a fallen Whills or Darth Plagueis is better than what we actually got from Snoke in canon. “Your Snoke theory sucks” No you unoriginal hack, your inability to do ANYTHING with the character fucking sucks.

"Who Are The Bachelors?"
So reads the headline of the LA Times. To answer, The Bachelors are a group of long time collage friends who managed to hit it big overnight in Hollywood, almost by suspicious means- but hey, they're powerful, so nobody can touch them, right? They're under the care of one famous jazz musician and casino owner, Henry Wallace, who has just about as much power and prestige as they come. But the question still remains: Who exactly are these men? How did they get their fortunes?
And months later, the paper adds another question:
"Who Killed Ryan Stover?"
Indie. Private. Selective. Multi-Muse OC blog from an original concept by Ace ♠. Inspired by Death of a Bachelor by P!.a.t.d. Temp. Dash only.

Yes, it’s true -- I’m writing the adult novelization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
No, I can’t tell you anything else -- that will come from Del Rey and Lucasfilm in good time. (Patience, young Jedi.)
But needless to say, I’m really excited. I mean, just look at that picture!
In the summer of 1977 I read the novelization of the original Star Wars (ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster) so many times that it fell apart -- the one you see there is a replacement copy. I devoured everything, from the Journal of the Whills prologue and the revelation (in the photo insert, of all places) that Tarkin burned to be Emperor to the weird stuff, like Luke remembering a dog he once owned and wondering what a duck is.
I saw the Donald F. Glut novelization of Empire in my local WaldenBooks (in the Smith Haven Mall on Long Island) a couple of weeks before the movie came out, gasped, and started reading it while walking through the corridors. (Not recommended.) The back cover promised STARTLING REVELATIONS, and they weren’t kidding. (I also ran with Han calling Hoth “deader than a Triton moon,” using that as the seed for my first Star Wars short story.) I dug into James Kahn’s Jedi novelization with the same fervor, loving Jabba’s boast about killing Jedi when the name meant something and the comparison of the rebel and Imperial fleets to seagoing armadas.
For the prequel era, my first assignment for the Star Wars Insider was to interview Terry Brooks about his Phantom Menace novelization; while I was the Insider book columnist I also interviewed Bob Salvatore and Matt Stover, as well as Foster and Glut. Three Celebrations ago I found myself next to Foster for an impromptu tour of the TFA costumes and props; and it’s been a pleasure getting to know Alexander Freed as a fellow author at Lucasfilm meetings.
So Star Wars novelizations have been a part of my fandom from the very beginning -- and now I get to write one. I’ve had a lot of pinch-me moments, but that’s near the top. And I can’t wait to share this book with you.
If you’re new to my writing, this is the place where I share links to the latest things I’ve done, as well as photos and some random thoughts. Besides Star Wars, I co-write a blog about the New York Mets and write about travel, storytelling, movies, music and anything else that moves me. (You can also follow me on Twitter, but be aware you’ll have to put up with a lot of baseball agita and some politics.)
Want more Star Wars from me? I’ve written 40-odd books and short stories, so there’s plenty. Try the four-volume Servants of the Empire series (start here), which ties in with Star Wars: Rebels. It’s marketed to kids, but the storytelling works for readers of any age. Check out The Weapon of a Jedi, my Luke Skywalker adventure, or the crazy-geeky The Essential Atlas, co-written with Dan Wallace.
I’m also the author of the Jupiter Pirates series, which includes three books with two more to come. It’s not Star Wars, but it’s about space pirates and it’s got battles, lost treasures, family secrets and all sorts of other stuff that I’m pretty sure you’ll like.
That’s it for now -- if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a book to write!
